France / Nice: Report From The 24th Iao World Ozone Congress “Ozone and advanced oxidation. Leading science and technology ”- Dr. Szymon Grzywacz
Why ozone benefits most patients in the 21st century
At the end of October 2019, in Nice, on the French Cote d’Azur, another meeting of the global community of ozone therapists, industrial ozone engineers for the benefit of entire communities, as well as professors and scientists who support theoretical research with both groups of practitioners took place. This time the congress was held under the name of “Ozone and advanced oxidation. Leading science and technology.
I am often asked by patients at our Polish health-related events about the health benefits of ozone. Several scientific papers were presented at the congress, presenting its wide range of applications. We all met with issues such as:
- ozonation of car air conditioning, ventilation system or rooms (in which there are bacteria, fungi and molds, or simply unpleasant odors);
- ozonation of food, e.g. meat or fruit (on a large scale for longer storage or transport as a substitute for chemical fungicides or at home in order to deactivate artificial agents on the surface of vegetables and fruits, especially exotic ones, imported from the other side of the world);
- pools with ozonated water and ozonation of sewage, which became so loud at the end of summer 2019 during the failure of the sewage collector in Warsaw. Water treatment plants have been using industrial ozone generators for many years, deactivating various chemical compounds such as drugs, including antibiotics and strong psychotropic drugs, artificial hormones (found in water caused by women using hormonal contraceptives or HRT), or pesticides, in the water.
Many of the above uses are the antimicrobial and fungicidal uses of ozone. We use the same possibilities inherent in ozone as an excellent disinfection when using “ozone shoes” in patients with wounds (eg non-healing wounds related to diabetic foot, ulcers, pressure sores, burns) 1 .
An extremely interesting research was undertaken by a team of Italian scientists, among whom were, among others Dr. Simonetti and Tabaracci. They took up the subject of molecular confirmation of one of the most mysterious mechanisms of ozone’s action on free radical scavenger systems so far. Tabaracci and colleagues confirmed what one of the visionaries of ozone therapy, Dr. Lamberto Re, had suspected, namely that the factor Nrf2 (nuclear transcription factor) was responsible for the activation of antioxidant systems. This is important information for physicians who were skeptical or critical of ozone and claimed that the mechanism of action of ozone therapy (e.g. when used as ozone autohemotherapy) was unknown 2. Thanks to scientific work that studies the molecular effects of ozone therapy on the human body, we already know a lot. They explain why ozone therapy has such good results in a wide range of patients.
I would like to briefly present the situations in which patients obtain health benefits using systemic ozone therapy (autohemotherapy) or enteral administration of an oxygen-ozone mixture.
Let’s start with what these ozone application methods are.
For ozone autohemotherapy, we use a relatively small amount of blood (approx. 100 ml), which is exposed to moderate ozone concentrations to:
- activate the body’s antioxidant systems,
- regulate the immune system and
- support the oxygenating properties of blood,
- support neuroprotective effects.
In this way, we significantly support the body in the case of diseases with a chronic inflammation (civilization diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, AMD), hypoxia (atherosclerosis, microangiopathies), recurrent or chronic infections (sinusitis, Lyme disease), other problems with the immune system (allergies, asthma, autoimmune disorders such as RA, Hashimoto’s), neurodegeneration (e.g. Parkinson’s disease).
The second method of ozone administration is enteral administration of a gaseous form of an oxygen-ozone mixture. It is used, among others:
- in people with inflammatory bowel disease,
- in children,
- in people whose veins are too fragile or small for autohemotherapy (e.g. after chemotherapy, the elderly, obese),
- in people whose inflammation mainly affects the pelvis or liver pathologies (hepatitis B, C).
As I mentioned, ozone increases the synthesis of antioxidants in the body. It is primarily about the well-known glutathione. The organism significantly increases its activity (as a result of “recovering” the reduced form of glutathione). Work on the hepatoprotective and nephroprotective effects of ozone therapy is carried out in Cuba by Professor Olga Leon Fernandez. It was she who showed why ozone therapy should be massively used in oncology hospitals before chemo- or radiotherapy! Ozonation, like no other action, protects the liver and kidneys against the negative effects of chemicals or ionizing radiation. At the same time, in patients undergoing oncological treatment, it ensures more effective action of these methods against tumor cells (much better oxygenating the tissues), and at the same time protecting healthy cells.
If someone carefully puts the facts together, he can see that ozone therapy reduces all the factors that lead to cancer:
- reduces hypoxia,
- reduces excessive oxidative stress,
- deactivates viruses,
- supports mitochondria in the production of cellular energy.
As we can see, health without drugs is possible, although no one says that it is easy to achieve.
Ozone therapy stimulates the regeneration of glutathione and it is a much more effective mechanism of increasing the value of this enzyme than administering it intravenously, or even more orally. Yes, it is definitely worth taking care of the right amount of N-Acetyl-Cysteine (because the body produces glutathione from it), but the absorption of the unchanged glutathione molecule from the gastrointestinal tract into the cells – a process that takes place only under very specific conditions. However, that is too broad a topic to be covered now.
At a time when chronic inflammation is a problem for so many of us (atherosclerosis, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, arthritis) – it is worth making sure that the body is able to inhibit inflammation early enough so that the acute (= needed) inflammation does not turn into chronic inflammation – degenerative and destructive. Hence, the anti-inflammatory effect of ozone 2 is irreplaceable (it acts in cells through nuclear factors Nrf2 and NfKB).
Another beneficial effect that occurs under the blood ozonation treatment cycle is the effect of improving the oxygen properties of red blood cells 3 . How does it happend? In the lungs, erythrocytes more efficiently exchange carbon dioxide into oxygen, and in the tissues they willingly give it back to the cells.
The works presented at the World Ozone Congress in Nice also prove the influence of ozone on increasing the production of melatonin and serotonin! We already know why patients who undergo ozone therapy sleep better and have a better mood! It is combined with:
- more energy during the day,
- better concentration of attention,
- greater physical performance,
- faster regeneration after exercise.
These are the effects that people with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia will benefit from.
We can now see why ozone therapy is used not only by people suffering from the diseases mentioned above, but also by healthy people. Currently, a fast and stressful lifestyle requires from us a special commitment also to effective regeneration, i.e. additional activities that will reduce the effects of such a high pace of life.
The audience was greatly impressed by the presentation of an Egyptian neurosurgeon who runs the local post-burn and plastic surgery ward – “Ozone nucleolysis is more effective in cervical spine lesions than in the lumbar region – 45,000 cases” 4. In a study summarizing the last 15 years of experience, he showed that ozone nucleolysis (a minimally invasive procedure consisting in injecting an oxygen-ozone mixture into the intervertebral discs as a substitute for neurosurgical surgery) is a very efficient method, more effective when applied to the cervical spine, but also used in lumbar region. Currently, this method is used not only in poor countries, but also in Germany and Switzerland, where patients waiting for classic surgery are eligible. The effectiveness of the ozone treatment is so high that approx. 60-70% of patients do not require neurosurgical treatment! Fortunately, these treatments are slowly entering Polish treatment rooms.
